About the product

This exhibition at the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich reflects on nature as a surface onto which we can project our wishes, longings and dreams. When we look at it consciously, nature becomes a landscape, a landscape show, one that is both personal and shaped by agriculture. Taking as its starting point the rural landscape of Lower Austria, one that has, since the 19th century, been offering peace and inspiration to those in need of recuperation, a multifaceted exhibition layout is set to give rise to a dynamic dialog between works of art belonging to Austria’s Atmospheric Impressionism, works of classic modern art, and contemporary works.

The picturesque places of longing by Emil Jakob Schindler, Maria Egner and Egon Schiele are contrasted with a contemporary perspective on the (agricultural) landscape, e.g., in the photographic work of Robert F. Hammerstiel, Michael Goldgruber and Margherita Spiluttini. However, in our current present the term “place of longing” can also be interpreted as something beyond the reach of a touristy setting: for example, as a place of retreat for people fleeing danger. This up-to-the-minute topic is addressed by several works, in the powerful photographs of Ekaterina Sevrouk and equally in a large-format fence installation by Iris Andraschek and Hubert Lobnig.
