The Value of Freedom

Freiheit Cover

The question of what exactly freedom is, how it can be won or lost, is addressed ever more frequently these days. The multifaceted notion of freedom is one that is inherently fragile, but it is also relational and subject to mutual dependencies and interrelations such as human and society, democracy and economy, work and freedom, body and mind, or nature and culture.

About the product

The question of what exactly freedom is, how it can be won or lost, is addressed ever more frequently these days. The multifaceted notion of freedom is one that is inherently fragile, but it is also relational and subject to mutual dependencies and interrelations such as human and society, democracy and economy, work and freedom, body and mind, or nature and culture.

The exhibition at Belvedere 21 with the rhetorical title “The Value of Freedom” and the catalog published alongside it examine and illustrate the psychological, social, cultural, religious, political and legal aspects of the contemporary understanding of freedom from various perspectives, with the help of works by more than 50 different artists. Here, the works presented tackle a variety of themes such as democracy, various forms of states, structures of coexistence and economics, but also surveillance, control, and censorship. In addition to this, the catalog offers a series of articles on the historic, social and cultural contexts of the concept of freedom.
