The publication “AWAY: The Book about Residencies” documents and analyzes various aspects of the Artist-in-Residence Program run by the Austrian Chancellery, which has been facilitating residencies for artists and art theorists for decades. Art plays an important role in sociopolitical development, and with this program, the Chancellery provides meaningful support to the network of international contemporary art creators in the areas of fine art, photography and media art. Participants are given not only financial support, but also accommodation in situ. Since the Artist-in-Residence Program was launched, more than 800 artists have participated, and their works and impressions arising from the residency are documented in the publication. As the editor Alexandra Grausam remarks in her foreword: “Residencies make an essential and crucial contribution to gathering experiences, living unfamiliar realities, and opening up new perspectives so that these can sooner or later flow into the artist’s own creative work.”
