The work of Franz Traunfellner (1913–1986), who was the first artist to receive the Cultural Prize for Fine Arts of Lower Austria in 1960 and was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art in 1984, includes drawings, watercolors, oil paintings, and, above all, printmaking in various techniques. Human beings, animals, and nature are among his preferred subjects. Franz Traunfellner is especially well-known for his woodcuts, in which he achieves an expressive and powerful representation through reduction to the essentials, celebrating and documenting the landscape of the Waldviertel.
The new book presents a versatile artist who, with his abstract lithographs, material prints, and monotypes, always demonstrated a willingness to experiment. This publication will serve as a standard work, complementing the existing digital catalogue raisonné, which primarily serves art-historical research. It will provide extensive and supplementary information for the interested reader and highlight the significant position of the artist in the Austrian art scene after 1945.
