In the “Herzen-Werkstatt” (heart workshop), art and religion are brought into a fruitful dialogue in relation to the motif of the "heart". When looking at and describing selected works by artists such as Ernst Barlach, Günther Uecker and Marcel Duchamp, it becomes clear that the art of the 20th century in a multifaceted way deals with questions of spirituality, emotionality and social coexistence without defining specific beliefs. It's about the attempt to use artistic means to approach the deeper meaning of the heart beyond its profane external form: “We don't know what it is, but it's damn big”, postulates the correspondent programmatic phrase written on the song board of the artist group SCHAUM .
