Kunst Handwerk – Art Craft
Between Tradition, Discourse and Technologies

(excl. VAT)

The publication is released on the occasion of the exhibition "Kunst Handwerk" at the Kunsthaus Graz. The exhibition shows the interest of contemporary artists in craftsmanship and production techniques, in material and materiality, while it is embedded historically, contextually, culturally and discursively. The importance and valuation of craftsmanship as an integral part of material culture, cultural identity and community is thereby thought together with social and economic conditions / production logics in a globalized world. With this approach, artists also challenge current political instrumentalizations of homeland, people, popular culture and tradition. The publication contains i.a. discussions with the artists involved in the exhibition and illustrations by Anna Gille, who translates into drawings the works of Azra Akšamija, Olivier Guesselé-Garai, Plamen Dejanoff, Olaf Holzapfel, Antje Majewski, Jorge Pardo, Slavs and Tatars, Haegue Yang and Johannes Schweiger. The design of Modern Temperament, Berlin, picks up on the discourses of the exhibition and reflects book design and printing between craftsmanship and digitization.
