The second year-book published by the Institute for Art in Public Space Styria describes 31 projects carried out with international and local artists in Graz and Styria. Art in public space investigates and questions this state both in urban and rural areas with regard to all kinds of relations and connections, including historical and contemporary political constellations. Memory constituted a focus of the Institute’s work commemorating the years of war catastrophies between 1914 and 1945. Other focal topics that took current conditions into account revolved around climate and the environment, light, border, centre and periphery, and the cooperation with young people. In democratic societies, public space is a political space for the general public. The special interest of artists in this kind of public sphere would seem to be undiminished.
