The third yearbook from Styria’s Institute for Art in the Public Space outlines 26 art projects and seven initiatives for cultural education which were realized with international and regional artists in Graz and Styria. Art in the public space examines and questions spaces in both urban and outlying areas with regard to various correlations, including those relating to history and current politics. Owing to the major project “Licht 2017,” the topic of light formed one area of focus. Other problem areas likewise with contemporary points of reference were memorials, the reinterpretations of monuments, human rights, center and periphery, and work with young people. In democratic societies, the public space represents a political sphere for the community. Artists’ particular interest in this kind of audience appears to continue unaltered.
