Elisabeth Strässle
Derborance. Malerei und Zeichnung

Verlagf Mk Kms Derborance Katalog U1

In choosing the title “Derborence” for her latest works Swiss artist Elisabeth Strässle addresses the novel of the same name by Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz (1878–1947). While Ramuz uses literature as a means of portraying the landslide in 1714 in the Les Diablerets region, the impact of the incident fascinates Strässle enough to create a subjective recollection of the catastrophe rather than seeking to depict it realistically.

About the product

This explains why all the works were first created in her studio. The drawings represent daily exercises in which she attempts to strike a balance between the representational idea and nonrepresentational appearance. One characteristic of her work is the blurring of media she employs: While many oil paintings recall drawings or watercolors some of the enormous canvases affixed directly to the wall are painted in such an impasto style as to almost resemble sculptures.

The publication appeared to mark Elisabeth Strässle’s first solo exhibition in a museum, namely Kunstmuseum Solothurn.
