About the product

Birgit Graschopf has been in the public eye for more than 15 years with her performances and staged photographs in which she transforms her own body into an object, using it as a material. One of the things that she does is to encourage her audiences to get involved during her performances, which she feels constitute the “portrayal of a sensory spectrum” – for example, she allows them to feel, cut off and taste grasses which she has got to grow on her body beforehand. Suddenly roused from their passive state, visitors can engage all their senses in interacting with the work of art and the artist. For her more recent photographic pieces Graschopf has been investigating (social) spaces and cultures. She creates the illusion of opening up walls with “wall lighting”, perforates Japanese rice paper to create fragile body pictures, draws bodies or fragments of bodies in “calli/ choreographed” relationships to their environment.
