About the product

The abstract painted works by artist Thean Chie Chan, who was born in Malaysia in 1972, confront his Asian origins and the European artistic tradition. In his fragmented, almost ornament-like works on paper or canvas, skulls and body parts such as hands, eyes or heads appear, hovering in the airless space or against a hellish abyss. Thean Chie Chan, who has lived in Vienna since 1992 and studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in the Attersee masterclass, cites Piero della Francesca, Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon as his influences. His examination of portrait-like heads or faces can be traced back to the European artistic tradition. Thean Chie Chan’s works can also be considered formal and structural experiments within the image area.

The exhibition in the tresor at the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien is entitled “Unfassbar umrissen” and presents new, existential-seeming works from the years 2017 to 2018, which take shape through the repetitive colored depictions of heads with different faces.
